Brad, The first question that you should ask the potential customer is if they are referring to storage group (database level) backup and restore or mailbox/item level backup and restore. It is a very imporant distiction that should be clarified with the customer first.
For full storage group (database level) backup and restore, Data Protection for Exchange uses the standard backup and restore APIs. That means it handles Single Instance Store (SIS) because it is built into those APIs. That is, Single Instance Store is preserved. If the question is referring to mailbox/item level backup and restore, the answer is different. The IBM documented solution using ExMerge and the TSM BA client does not preserve the single instance store. However, please look at previous discussions on this list server about mailbox/item level backup and restore and ways to set up your Exchange environment to avoid it.
