I am having the same issue. It is due to the latest MS worm hit to your W2K clients. If you will look before you try a backup, the RPC service is not running. When it isn't running, you get the errors below. If you reboot the box and RPC fires back up, no problems on the backups.
Your servers/workstations will need to be patched. Go to MS website for bulletin on MS03-026 to get the appropriate patch. Be careful, the 03-026 patch can cause issues on servers as it affects DCOM functionality.
