My sentiment, as well. Backup set is made from the data already on the server, you don't have to transmit it again. Downside, it is more difficult to restore a single file from a backup set.
You could also 1) Use a different node name for the monthly archive 2) Run the full backup to that node name. 3) Export the data to tape 4) Delete the filespace from the server. 5) Put the tapes on a shelf. Advantage, if you have to get the data back, you import 1 tape then it's easy to find and restore a single file. The data base space needed would stay about the same from month to month. Both methods have the downside that the tapes have to be tracked VERY CAREFULLY, as they are only visible in volume history. (or on the shelf).
