My understanding of lto1/lto2 from our HP reps is . . ..

lto2 drives can:
      - read and write lto1 tape
      - but you do it at lto1 speed and density
      - in other words, they act just like lto1 drives when you put in lto1
media

To get lto2 speed and density you need to use lto2 media.

ibm lto2 drive can write data to ultrium1 media also, performance is very
good (40 mb/s, compresion on drive).

But, the LTO2 drives can read media that was written by LTO1.

Can anyone who has experience with these drives please help with a
question?
For those of us that use 3590 drives we know they are upgradeable from E to
H. Are LTO1 drives upgradeable to LTO2 or are they a completely different
animal?

Thanks,
