Why not just use a different tape drive/library for db backups?  This is
especially appealing for small shops where the bother of using a manual
library is less pain than the cost of tapes.

You only have to pay for the 1's you write on the tape.  The unused
portion
is free.  In the case of the DB tape, however, the information is more
valuable than the data on primary or copy storage pool tapes, so the cost
per 1 is higher.  Thus, you can't use the whole tape.

well, having a small database (500MB) and a large tape (400GB) it's at
least a waste of tapes..

this is the way it ment to be ... i believe there is no logic in making
dbbackups on same tape
but you can always consult pdf-s ...
