Unreadable files result from difficulties in reading a volume, either because the media has marginal areas or because of issues with the read head on the drive (e.g., dirty). Try repeating on another drive. Query CONTent will then show what's problematic on the tape. Tape drive microcode levels sometimes affect tape handling and might exacerbate I/O errors.
