Been there, done that. We ran into this with Dell GX260 machines. The instructions below explain how to deal with the issue for the GX260. You will need to adapt these instructions for your own hardware.
Adding NIC Drivers to the ASR procedure For the DELL GX260 models PC's with Windows XP, it is necessary to pre-install the NIC drivers from the Dell OptiPlex ResourceCD 1. Using a functioning PC, create a temporary directory to install to (c:\dell) 2. Insert CD labeled " Dell OptiPlex ResourceCD for Reinstalling Device Drivers and ..." 3. If the ResouceCD has not been installed previously, the Installshield Wizard will prompt you to install. 4. Continue to enter "NEXT" and "Finish" 5. Select pull-down for Model OptiPlex GX260 6. Select pull-down for Operating System Windows XP 7. Select Topic ALL 8. Scroll down and select "Intel 8254X 1000 Integrated Network" 9. Select "Extract" 10. Continue to extract to c:\dell\drivers\R54402 11. Do not install NIC drivers on the host machine 12. Copy files in c:\dell\drivers\R54402\WinXp to a floppy and hold for install 13. Edit the TSMASR floppy and insert the following three lines at the beginning of the TSMASR.cmd file: @echo Please insert Dell NIC drivers disk in drive A: @PAUSE a:\setup.exe That's it.
