Thanks to all those that have assisted. Just one more question...what do I need to keep in mind with regards to restores when designing my backup method. From what I have read there could be serious issues with restores and I just want to make sure I cover all issues. Jeff

TSM requires that the backup devices are connected to the TSM server (exception if the library is SAN attached), so the local tape dirves cannot be used on the TSM clients 2. The scheduler on the TSM client either runs in polling or prompted mode. The latter is the preferred one (at least I find so). The TSM server then contacts the TSM client that a backup should begin. The schedules itself are defined on the TSM server either through the ISC console or the good old Administrative Command-Line 3. Check the Supported Devices matrix at http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBM_TSM_Supported_Devices_for_AIXHPSUNWIN.html t osee if the Device driver is required. Some backup devices do require it, other don't and for some you can choose. 4. Backup to disk on the TSM server is one of the strong points of TSM, so yes it is possoble. But the disk space must be on the TSM server. Hope that this gets you started. best regards, Kurt ________________________________ Van: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager namens Jeff Waiter Verzonden: wo 12/10/2005 17:11 Aan: [email protected] Onderwerp: [ADSM-L] Basic newbie questions Hi, I am hoping that someone out there can answer some very basic questions that I have around TSM 5.3 as i have to implement the solution and I am having great difficulty in understanding certain concepts, I've only started working with the product recently: TSM 5.3 in a windows environment. 1) I have 10 servers with local tape drives in each machine. Can I backup the servers to the tape drives by only installing TSM server on a seperate server and then installing TSM client on each server and instructing TSM to backup each server to the local tape drives or do I have to install TSM server to each of the servers that I need to backup? 2) Are the backup operations a push from the client to the server or do you configure the policies on the server and the server then instructs the client what to backup. Either way where do I view these policies and configure them? Using the MMC plugin or the Integrated solutions console? 3) What is the purpose of Device driver and in this case do I need to load the device drivers for the tape drives in all my servers? 4) For testing purposes is it possible to backup a server to disk on another server via the LAN?
