You're right, I think it defines the media type from the label...

It's also part of the tape label (L1, L2 or L3, that is if you are using
the IBM labels). 
I've seen at a customer site tape labels like A0000002 and then
TSM/Library/Driver thinks this is an
LTO2 tape, but in fact it was LTO1.
