You don't even have to check them out. You can enter: update libv xxxxxx status=scratch
If there is any valid data on them, TSM will refuse. The most common reason scratch tapes get marked as PRIVATE with no valid data, is putting the tapes in the library without running LABEL LIBV to initialize them with the internal label. If they are in storage pools you must UPDATE VOLUME XXXXXX access=READWRITE to clear the UNAVAILABLE status. The most common reason tapes in storage pools get marked as UNAVAILABLE is that TSM can't mount them, either due to a robot failure or the TSM inventory getting out of sync with the library, so that the tape can't be found. Easy fix for that is to run AUDIT LIBRARY XXXX CHECKLABEL=BARCODE. Keep an eye out every day for UNAVAILABLE volumes. When you find one, query the activity log for the past 48 hours, searching for that VOLSER. TSM puts a message in the activity log when it marks a volume UNAVAILABLE. Looking at the messages just prior to that entry will give you a clue as to WHY TSM is marking them that way. Do not use TSM for this. Second, reconcile the hardware inventory against what TSM reports in "q libvol" for this library, perhaps doing a TSM library audit beforehand. Third, investigate the disparities. You unavailable tapes could be out of the library or were made unavailable when TSM couldn't mount them because of drive errors or whatever. If they are in the library and not damaged, just update them to readwrite. Fourth, review your reclamation policy and procedures. Fifth, if you still are out of slots, upgrade your tape technology, get another frame on your library, or eject tapes and start storing them outside your library. Orville L.
