I did that on AIX on a test machine and everything worked as well as I expected (5.2.9 -> 5.5.0). No, the DB will not auto upgrade itself, you'll need to run "dsmserv upgradedb" (spelling may be off there).
I don't run TSM on Windows so Your Mileage May Vary on the upgrade.
