You can save yourself a lot of time by upgrading to 5.5 then applying the 5.5.1 patch straight from where you are. You'll need to run the "upgradedb" command, but other than that you should be good. We went straight to 5.5.1 from 5.2.9, and all is well.
You may need to re-register your licenses but, it's not a big deal. If you are currently under maint. With IBM for TSM you are licensed for 5.5.1, or whatever the current highest level is.
