John - The ANS4008E message is conventionally due to file locking. In a Samba environment you can use its command 'smbstatus -L' to check on what locks are in effect, where the DenyMode seems to have more to do with the locking than what you see in the R/W column - which is to say that even if the R/W column shows a RDWR lock, one can still cat the file. I'm no Samba expert, so can't say definitively if you can get around this for TSM backups. See background info in http://oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch05_05.html . An emulation environment like this can be bewildering when trying to figure out issues.
