To re-establish confidence in the log (so that the client will start using it again), I tend to stop the scheduler and do a manual incremental with "-incrbydate".
Doing the two problematic filesystems (with 22M objects) in parallel, and using incrybydate, I can get through the backup in about 3 hours. Without journal or incrbydate, it takes about 15 hours. Once backups on this system are stable, I'll be putting a "-nojournal" on the Saturday backups, as is suggested by the TSM docs. It sure would be nice if the Windows client got smarter. Configuring all these expert-friendly options are OK, but it begins to feel like the Monty Python Cheese Shop skit after a while. I see some mention of a "scout" around 6.x. Maybe something better is coming out. Following the trend, it will cost extra? I still can believe TSM for Copy Services costs extra: We're just trying to use a VSS provider that MicroSoft provides.
