Before going to VMs we always loaded Windows first, then the TSM client before doing restores. But then it was only selected directories. As far as I know in order to do a BMR with TSM you need to use TSM to create a automated recovery diskette. This is used to start TSM client for the restore but we never looked in to it because it appeared that each machine's recovery diskette was unique and this is not supported on some of our machines.

One of the Windows admins here has quite a bit of effort into documenting the specifics required for this process to work. So far he has piled up quite a bit of negative evidence. The most recent set of problems after restore are: Windows update is dead. Any changes to profiles are lost. Error message related to "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\iedkcs32.dll" and "entry:BrandIEActiveSetup" both occur at login. (The doc we're working with is: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=663&context=SSGSG7&q1=BMR&u id=swg21164812&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8%E2%8C%A9=en ) We've used local and domain accounts to perform the backup and restore. The OS is W2K8 SP2 (64bit) The client is 5.5.2.0 (64bit) The TSM server is 5.4.2.0 running on AIX 5200-09 (64bit). I've searched the redbooks site, the Tivoli Information Center, the ADSM-L search site, the fastback documentation, the doc on using WinPE with BMR, etc. So far I'm finding anything that tells how to avoid these problems with W2K8. Is anyone on the list seeing success with W2K8 BMR using the TSM client alone?
