Regarding the "Trivial" encryption key. That was a different problem for us. We had an issue with our EKM that led to tapes being encrypted with a trivial key. Older tapes were unreadable with the trivial key. You would be seeing strange tape drive failures and lots of errors on older files but not newer files that you were restoring... I don't think a trivial key is your problem. Sorry for the red herring.
