Part of the problem is that companies would like to standardize on TSM and related products, but don't want to be repeatedly stung for point solutions. eg if they use DB2, there is no cost for the TSM client, but MSSQL or Oracle there is. Some organizations just want the all-you-can-eat approach.
Most of my clients have tended to be government agencies. These like to keep as much data for as long as possible, because someone might be held responsible in the unlikely event that data was not available when required - it is easier to defer decisions indefinitely. For these, and for SarbOx constrained firms the burden of paying for all that dead weight will be intolerable... be aware that once you go volume pricing you cannot go back. Just watch for the inevitable requests for periodic exports or backupsets to keep old data without having to pay for it. In some cases it may be better to use TSM for short term, strategic backup (say up to a year) but use Amanda/bacula or some other cheap solution for your longer term retentions. Regards Steve. I have some questions about this article, maybe they are strange, but anyway: What is this: - try to push customers to use TSM 6? - try to implement new pricing policy? - totally new product instead of Tivoli Storage Manager (from licensing point of view)? - something else?
