Mike, I installed TSM for VE 6.4 shortly after it was released and then had a DR test in early December. During the DR test we were restoring from a tape library with 12 LTO-4 drives. Since approximately 98% is virtualized using VMware most of the restores were coming from TSM for VE. Although the new version will allow you to select multiple VMs for restore it will only use one datamover and each datamover will only restore 1 VM at time. Consequently, we initially had several drives that were idle until I created additional datamover nodes.
As far as file level restores from tape using TSM for VE, I have found also found it to be a painful process. To work around the pain I move the backup data for the filespace from tape to disk using: MOVE NODEDATA <node name> FROMSTGPOOL=<tape pool name> TOSTGPOOL=<disk pool name> FILESPACE="\VMFULL-<VMware server name> MAXPROCESS=<I use 6> With maxprocess set to 6 it usually only takes about 30 minutes to move the data. Obviously, this is going to be dependent on the size of the VM and if the VM is too large it may not be worth doing this.
