Setting TXNGROUPMAX and RESOURCEUTILIZATION very high could help too, so you can aggregate many objects into a single transaction. As a point of comparison, we backup 10s of millions of files every night (many over NFS) and are able to meet our one-backup-every-24-hours SLA. Of course, if you can find ways to reduce your object count, you'll be in much better shape.
