Should have waited an additional 10 minutes to submit this. The way to work around is to close all files that generate the issue. Restart Android Studio. Go to preferences before opening any of the files that exhibit the problem. Disable the gutter images. Then hit OK and your preferences will be saved. This way I was able to keep working without the fix.
