The planet does not necessarily need less people. That is the biggest flaw in the logic. It is brainwashing and paranoia created by media. The planet is doing fine and will be ok even if we destroy all our forests and animals and nuke each other to oblivion. The planet once had giant dinosaurs which all got wiped out. The universe does not give a shit about humans and this is not the only form of universe. That kid was a paranoid schizophrenic.
