chicken evolved from reptiles, reptiles evolved from fish, fish evolved from sea squirts and so on....if you go back to the basics, fungi, bacteria and viruses... viruses don't have a protoplasm and cannot replicate unless they are in a host. How can you classify virus as dead or alive ? It is only a simple DNA or RNA enveloped with a protein coat. Can you call that as life ? Priion proteins themselves are infectious agents. How can you describe life ?
And which came first ? chicken or egg ?Bacteria gave rise to invertebrates then to fish, reptiles and finally birds. In that process, reptiles do lay eggs, and fish lay eggs, spiders and all invertebrates lay eggs. Before them, the bacteria were not laying the eggs. So we have to find out the exact date on which the chicken evolved into a chicken. And on that date, we have to find whether the chicken was in the egg or was it laying the egg. There is no chicken and there is no egg. It is a continuous flow of life.
