Make and its derivatives are an abomination upon the world of software
development, birthed into this world by some deranged and psychotic
engineer.  Why else would different whitespace markers have syntactical
significance?

Besides, you'd have to craft the nmake files by hand - vstudio no longer
supports exporting nmake files.

Ant (and its siblings nAnt and MSBuild) are a blessing to anyone who has
ever been hip-deep in makefiles and autoconf scripts.

Why not use nmake and makefiles ? You have much more control that way.
