I don't like the idea of writing special-case tools to perform such basic
codegen.

In this old blog article, I show how I use an X-Code .NET template to emit
an AssemblyVersion.cs file based on the current datetime. (Scroll down,
past the rant about version-incrementing. :)

http://weblogs.asp.net/savanness/archive/2003/09/17/27906.aspx
  <%
  var now:DateTime = DateTime.Now;
  var build:short = (short)(now.Year);
  var revision:short = (short)(now.Month*1000 +
    now.Day*10 + now.Hour*10/24);
  %>

  [assembly: System.Reflection.AssemblyVersion(
    "<%= major %>.<%= minor %>.<%= build %>.<%= revision %>")]

I don't really support X-Code .NET for the general public anymore -- I tend
to recommend CodeSmith. (Its syntax is 99% identical to the above.)

I downloaded the code and compiled it, but it doesn't work, i'm getting
"Version not found in input. Output equals input." error. I checked
AssemblyInfo.vb there is a version tag. Do you have any clue???
Thanks,
Mitesh
