According to James Vastbinder's blog (he works for MS) http://weblogs.asp.net/jvast/archive/2004/08/19/217227.aspx the copy of .NET 1.1 SP1 that's on the XPSP2 CD is NOT an "official copy" of .NET 1.1 SP1. That page includes this quote: "[\dotnetfx\setup.exe] will have to be the tech preview version which was removed from MSDN when we released XP SP2. I am checking and looking for an ISO. I do know the RTM version will not be out for a short while yet. It may also be a mistake, its been known to happen." This suggests that the "preview" of .NET 1.1 SP1 has been distributed to a gazillion people, somewhat as if it were the final version. Hopefully the installer for the "real" version of .NET 1.1 SP1 will be smart enough to correctly overwrite the preview version, and not exit prematurely because "SP1 is already installed." Ugh. J.
