Despite the advantages of PNG laid out by Ian, if the final destination for
the image is to be displayed in a browser, the OP may be disappointed to
know that IE doesn't render transparent PNGs properly. There are many
googlable discussions of the issue, but I don't know of a simple-to-use,
foolproof way around it. (I'd be happy to hear a solution.)
