If you use VMWare instead of VPC, not just your image backups but the actual 
images themselves can take less space by "descending from" another image.

If your virtual machine (under either VPC or VMWare) shares its drive (or 
projects directory or whatever), the main (host) OS can back it up using 
ordinary backup software.  If multiple virtual machines give their shares 
different names, the backups could coexist.

I have not tried to do exactly what you're doing, so take this all with a grain 
of salt...
