I won't say what used to be done[1], but now, members of lists [today]
which have savvy owners|managers will post the first of those messages
and the owner will quickly set them to DIGEST and post that fact. 
Then everyone knows nothing more should hapen and they don't need to
post a notification because it's likely crossing the wires whilst the
DIGEST is being set up.

[1] back in the days of when I coined the phrase "The World's Biggest
Secret Club" in reference to the Internet.  For the most part, the
only people who really knew what it was were those who were on it. 
There were a lot of them, but that's a relative statement.
