I won't say what used to be done[1], but now, members of lists [today] which have savvy owners|managers will post the first of those messages and the owner will quickly set them to DIGEST and post that fact. Then everyone knows nothing more should hapen and they don't need to post a notification because it's likely crossing the wires whilst the DIGEST is being set up.
