Are you doing something to make sure that setting extendedcontrol.Text re-sets your extender's SelectedIndex (and possibly adds to TextItems)?
When you set Text to TextItems[SelectedIndex], set the default to the same thing and you'll be in clover (I think). Your code will presumably get a chance to run (and set Text as above) before the framework displays the Text property.
