I agree with all of your points and advise. I too had considered that the issue I discuss could be a security issue. I'm not sure I'd call it a hole because at the day I'm responsible for what's redirected to what in my server's GAC (the assemblies are not loaded from remote sources).
As I said I found someone who was mucking with IL to get around this but I'm not willing to go there because doing so violates the principles of versioning/signing. Just because I can doesn't mean I should. Recompiling the application (in my case several dependant assemblies) against the new version of the open-source dll is the only other option ... but I always like to check first.
