Hi Wayne,
no, customizing or tweaking a L&F is not an all or nothing type thing. In
fact you can easily tweak specific pieces of the Metal L&F. Simply
subclass javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel and overwrite the
initClassDefaults() method. In there you can hook up your own UI
implementation of the component you want to tweak. The UI implementation
can also easily be donw by subclassing the specific class from the Metal
L&F.
I have done that several times.
