Hi ,
As far I know a modal dialog should not allow you to interact with
another
JFrame in the same application unless it has been closed. But I came across a
case where in, this is violated. In the same application I open a JFrame and
then a JDialog which is modal. I can now shift the focus to the JFrame, from
the
JDialog. The JFrame does not respond to mouse clicks but can respond to key
strokes even the modal JDialog is open.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks
pradeep

Subject: table column holding

Hi everyone,

I'm having a little trouble and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I am
using a JTable to display some data, and one
feature I would like to implement is holding columns of the table. This
means that the columns would not be affected by
the scrollpane and would basically stay in place while the other columns in
the table scroll. If someone has an idea on
how I might implement this, it would be greatly appreciated!

I tried the example form codeguru.com (for those familiar with this site).
They suggest using 2 adjacent tables where
left-hand table contains held columns and right-hand table contains
scrollable ones. This did not work well for me. If
anyone knows how to fix the problems with their example, any thoughts would
be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Julia

There's also an example of doing this in the O'Reilly "Java Swing"
(Jukebox) book in Chapter 16. They too use 2 JTables, one with only one
column, and 2 TableColumnModels for them.

Use two tables sharing the same TableModel. takes the locked columns from
the scrolling table and put them in the
fixed table. Here is the key. The scrolling table should be the Scrollable
element of the ScrollPane and the fixed (locked) table should be added as
the RowHeader element on the ScrollPane. Also set the UPPER_LEFT corner to
be the locked table's TableHeader. This should work. (at least is did for
me)

If changing J2SE versions is possible, look into 1.4 beta. supposedly =
the
JFileChooser has been modified to correctly mirror a Windows chooser
(including having the desktop as the top most directory).

Greg, this applies only in case of a default Windows installation.

It could be C:\MYDIR\DESKTOP or C:\WINDOWS\PROFILES\XYZ\DESKTOP
depending on installation and number of users.

As far as I know there's no reliable way of determining this in
Java, unless we tap into Win32 API. If any of you have resolved this =
without
using Win32 API, pls. do let me know.

1.4 seems to hold out some promise in this area. Check out

Ah - ok, then..

In that case, you could simply have the location of the desktop as a
configuration parameter / java property. This could be done by whoever
installs the software, or a property file could be generated by a C program
that uses the Windows API.

I would be wary about deploying third-party beta software into a production
