Thanks Dave and Neil for your swift reply. I found the leak using OptimizeIt. It appears that not only the ToolTipManager, but also the MediaTracker kept a reference to the picture-data, therefor preventing it from being gc-ed.
The trick was to unregister the Component from the ToolTipManager, nulling the MediaTracker, changing the picture, creating a new MediaTracker, registering the picture with the MediaTracker, and re-registering the Component with the ToolTipManager... Crude, maybe, but effective... I felt like those guys in Apollo 13, watching the energy consumption of the powering up of the command-module... :) Thanks again, and good luck!
