Hi John and Jim,

Several months ago, a delegation from Dalian visited Honolulu. One of the
visitors told me that he was in one of the Sun seminars held in the Dalian
University of Technology (??????), and there were probably one thousand
standing-room-only attendees. This event predated all the dates in John's
list. He was very impressed by the size of the crowd--it seems that there are
a lot of interests in Java and Sun, to which OpenSolaris can be rightfully (and
proudly) related.

I am sure we are all aware that Citigroup and Fidelity Investments, the top one
and two financial institutions in the US, have recently set up their BPO
centers in Dalian. Many others are expected follow. As far as BPOs go, this
"should" make Dalian right in the backyard of Sun's (and Solaris'). I have not
heard anything about Sun officially doing anything in Dalian. But this seems
to an area where a community can quickly move in, do the trailblazing, and help
establishing a solid foundation. Of course, this is what John and James have
been doing. And we are all very appreciative of their efforts.

Back to the Dalian delegation. I must admit that I have been brain-washed by
our visitors. But I want to mention some of the things I was briefed. I was
told that all of three top software exporters in China, Neusoft (??), Dalian
Hi-Think (??), Hi-Soft (??), are headquartered in Dalian. IBM and HP have been
very active in Dalian for quite some time. Intel recently began constructing a
$6 billion USD 12" fab (& associated activities) in Dalian. Microsoft does not
have a direct presence, but it recently bought a controlling interest in Dalian
Hi-Think.

They also mentioned that the gross revenue from software related businesses was
583 billion RMB (or about $85B USD) in 2007, and has been growing at about 35%
annually, and more than 10,000 software developers and IT professionals
migrated to Dalian every year. There are 22 colleges and universities in
Dalian, every one has a school of software and IT services. Their emphasis is
to develop JACK (Japanese, American English, Chinese, Korean) related services.
(Ironically, JACK happens to be the USERID and PASSWORD of our very own
OpenSolaris LiveCD :-) )

But the key fact IMO is that the central government of China is pushing Dalian
to become the BPO center for the Asia-Pacific region (& with two trillion USD
in their cash reserve to back it up). This is an area where Solaris will
really shine, and we should be in a very good position to make that happen. :-)

I know Sun's Beijing team only has very limited resources. But if there is
anything we can do to help (in establishing a first class OpenSolaris community
in Dalian), please let me know. For example, I personally am very interested
in establishing a grass root effort on multi-lingual computing in the College
of Software of the Dalian University of Foreign Languages:

http://edawai.dlufl.edu.cn/schools/soft.html

This school is probably too small for Sun's Beijing team to pay attention to,
but this is one place where we can contribute.

Regarding starting an OSUG in Hawaii, I will be more than happy to get the ball
rolling.
