hello from a small corner of Asia.
i have followed this thread with interest.
for the past 2 years, i have been involved in ict advocacy
for women's group in the region and finding the concept of
"gender balance" very important. perhaps the YAPC TPC booth
should be staffed with equal number of male and female.
this to me has advocacy implication. i'm not sure if any of
you have followed the boring UN conference, but there was
a session discussing ICT for (human) Development where
ministers came up with a declaration. This will feed into
upcoming G8 summit. So what? - There'll be more money for
technological training in developing world, and IMO more
need for techno-women. it would be nice if YAPC and the like
can take advantage of this trend.
i'm concerned with the fact how small percentage of women in
techno field is.. but given the interests of more relatively
younger ones gaining interest to engage in programming (be it
>from desinger back ground or else) i certainly find it a stong
advocay point for Perl if there are more female mongers and
the male mongers also appreciate the need to create supportive
environment for female 'wanna-be's.
i personally wouldn't go for dial tone personality but women
at the booth knowledgeable of Perl would be attractive. but
this could be a quality required for workshops - not selling
T-shirts.
