They are calling 9MB 'bloat'..geez, noone has seen the distribution of
Perl lately have they?

I have found Sun to be somewhat conservative in what they include but it
has made for a stable OS. Also, patch clusters and updates come out with
far greater regularity and speed than HP, AIX or any other commercial
UNIX. We even get Perl as part of the core OS these days as well.

And, the devtools are all either on the supplemental pkg cdrom or on the
Sun website. If you can't find them email or call them and they'll send
you loads of stuff to lure you into the Java camp :)

Sun is high on Java and there is no surprise there. "Company Shill
Promotes Company Product, News @ 11!"

Sun is a big company and Sun spends lots of money crafting this message
just like MS does. No ad company would ever push 'Swiss Army Chainsaw' as
A) 'swiss army' is a trademark and B) chainsaw is a tool of violence to
man and tree. Perhaps images of semi-naked women on top of a hot car with a
license plate emblazoned with "perl rox" or something on it would be a
place to start...maybe have a geek guy in the car with the text underneath
saying 'Perl. It makes even your most unlikely fantasies come true". :)

Be happy that Solaris has Perl and several useful utilities using perl
installed in the core OS these days. Alan Burlison, et. al. had to fight
hard to get it there and if Sun wants to make a bigger deal out of Java,
well, no big whoop.
