I suspect you're a little out of touch with current reality:
It is impossible to install Solaris 8 (even in the most minimal
configuration) without Perl also being installed in /usr/bin/perl.
Sun tech support will provide support for perl on Solaris (to the same
extent as they support awk, for example).
There are also a bunch of Solaris commands that are *implemented* in perl
(performance stats stuff, I forget the names, written by Alan Burlison).
