question that appeared not to occur to any of us at the time:

Was this an open-ended survey, with items like "List the top five skills
for which you're hiring this next year", or more like this: "Mark which
of these languages you are hiring for next year: Java, C, C++, Cobol"?
If it was the second, I don't take the results very seriously, so far as
Perl is concerned, though it's interesting to compare the items about
which the survey did ask.
