When I started my current job there was this rusty old on-line parts library
system that required updating. It had been cobbled together in a mixture of
C shell script, SED and AWK and was file-based running on UNIX. The
requirement was for an NT based system that could talk directly to the PDM
database and it needed to be done two month ago (Honest! That's what I was
told.). With no tools and no clue how I was going to do this I remembered
about something called Perl, and that it was free! So I bought the OReilly
'CGI Programming with Perl' and 'Programming Perl' books downloaded the
various bits I needed and started hacking away. Almost two years later I've
done lots more interesting things with Perl and am a fan!
