Hi Dan,

To address your questions:

1) The insertion tag functionality is a feature of AdWords and is
independent of the API and should work correctly for those ads.

2) The reports will include impression and click data from those ad
types.  I don't believe there is any way to exclude these ad types in
the reports.  If you want their data separately, it may be best to
move them into separate campaigns/ad groups that you can filter on
when processing the report data.
