Hi Andrew, You can determine the average position of an ad group by either:
a) Getting the stats using the v2009 API: http://code.google.com/apis/adwords/v2009/docs/reference/AdGroupCriterionService.Stats.html b) Running a report using the v13 API: http://code.google.com/apis/adwords/docs/developer/adwords_api_report_adgroup.html#aggr_AdGroupDaily You can also use the TrafficeEstimatorService to see how you can expect your traffic to change with a modified bid: http://code.google.com/apis/adwords/docs/developer/TrafficEstimatorService.html#estimateAdGroupList.
