If you are using the v201101 reporting as the wording report definition would suggest, the reports should be effectively synchronous. The only reports that are not synchronous in v201101 as far as I know are the cross-client reports which currently are not supported.
If you are using v13 and the report definition id is actually a report job id, there are several threads around about reports taking a long time to run in v13 lately.
