Possibly some of these were making a small amount of money, but his 
instinct is 100% correct that you can't run this stuff blindly - stats 
change wildly from week to week, and it is not feasible to optimize these 
on a continuous basis without data. "Trust me, you will make money" is not 
a business strategy.

I wish EVERY marketing department had the guts to make these kind of 
decisions, because it would cause enough of a revenue drop to prompt 
google-AdWords to make the data available to the people who are paying to 
run the media.

For now, I am off this thread and on to something more productive (which is
