I imagine most of it would be sketches done for newspapers because cameras
were not allowed. So most of it would be of a rather deadpan,
documentary nature. Newspapers would not have been looking for art.

And this is exactly why such a painting belongs in an exhibit -- to provoke
a
memorable comment like what attorney Mike Mallory has written below -- a
comment not about the history of art --but about living in our world.

But there's still something about the piece that is missing isn't there? I
can't think of any word to describe it -- other than the word "formal" --
which would also point toward the difference between a kitchen still-life by
Chardin, and the millions of others on the same subject.

And the more I think about art museums, I don't know why they need to own
very
much at all -- just a few things that are really extraordinary -- and a
bunch
of other stuff to trade back and forth with other museums to make temporary
exhibits.

Maybe this painting got sold off mostly because nobody ever wanted to borrow
it?

Has anyone here seen an exhibit of courtroom art ? I never have - but I
think
such events should be occasionally assembled. Obviously, the public loves
to
see courtrooms -- the television shows are full of them.

Though it is true that such exhibits would have to include Daumier - and he
is
a very hard act to follow.

"It may not be that the attorney failed. Some cases are simply not
winnable.

I believe a fair read of this painting is that the kiss is both a
demonstration of gratitude for the attorney's loyalty and efforts and a
farewell to the last person who believed in the innocence of the convicted.
The attorney may be the last link to a lost life and there is a kind of
intimacy that develops in such a relationship."
