Chris asks: > So Cheerskep -- would you sit through all of Friel's TRANSLATIONS again -- > just to get to the moment that gives you an a.e. ? > Yes. Indeed, I've done it. I first saw the play in London and then went to see it again in New York, though I knew most of it was hum-drum. If I were the director of a revival of the play I would hope the playwright would sit down with to consider cuts.
And Chris asks: > > Would you sit through a recording of all of that Niners playoff game again > --- just to get to its moment if a.e. ? > > Or -- would you rather just see the highlights again? > The great thing about a dvd or Tivo is it allows you to fast-forward. But it has to be done with a creative sensibility, not unlike that of a creative writer. Indeed, good film-editing is considered a crucial part of making a good movie. To answer your question: Realize: the actual action-time in a football game is exactly sixty minutes. I'd probably fast-forward through almost all the commercials and other time-outs. When you're watching a game live, you often use that time to go to the bathroom, or reheat your coffee, or grab a snack from the frig -- but if I'm watching a recording of the game, I can do those things by simply putting the dvd on pause. And I'd cut down the twenty-minutes devoted to halftime. But I wouldn't cut all the playing time up to that last three minutes, nor would I even confine it solely to highlights -- things like touchdowns and successful field goals. I'd probably keep six or seven minutes of fruitless head-butting and missed passes, to reinstate the feeling of just how hard it is to gain yardage in a pro football, and how most possessions do not end with the team scoring. Then I'd play the entire last three minutes in"real time" -- maybe even including the commercials. > > > I now realize that our responses to such things are so different, I have no > idea how you will answer. > I infer you're a football fan, so I ask: How about you? Would you try to recreate the moment any differently? My answer assumed I hadn't watched the event in some years. ************** Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight?
