I can "understand" William's grumbling if I take this tack again, but I'll
say that Chris in effect got it right. There is no "THE" meaning of
"understanding". Let's momentarily use the word 'meaning' to label the notion a
person has
in mind when he uses or hears the word, and observe it is only the meaning
FOR HIM. Ask ten different people what 'the meaning of understanding' is for
them, and they will describe a variety of notions. A while back I posted a list
of fuzzy words used by philosophers. 'Understanding' was one of them. And, as
with so many such words, 'degree' is key, even in something as seemingly
inelastic as "understanding" a mathematical problem.
