Come to think of it -- I think I've been raising this issue on this listserv
every four years.
But it came to mind this year after watching a world-class dance program at
the Pritzker Pavillion Wednesday night. (I also like to go to student-level
dance programs -- but this show reminded me just how important high quality
really is)
The organizer of this fine event, choreographer, Lar Lubovitch, in addition to
the dances his company performed that evening, has also choreographed
routines for Olympic ice dance competitors.
Are these Olympic ice dances based on quantifiable activities (like how many
jumps and twists etc) -- or are those considerations just thrown in to make
the judging appear a little more objective ? (which doesn't make them any less
relevant to the artistic success of the performance)
I have a voyeuristic lust for all of it - whether in a contest or a concert
performance. Maybe I'm not Christian enough, but I'm just not ashamed of
having that reaction.
Voyeuristic lust is a good thing! It's a way of enjoying life.

Despite your voyeuristic lust for nearly naked bodies as the best reason to
enjoy the Olympic contests, all Olympic events are based on quantifiable
activities. The arts are not quantifiable, except in ways that measure
irrlelvant features, skills, etc. Thus I would not compete in any art
Olympics, naked or clothed.
