Actually, I'd say that Duccio was an example of the solitary adventure with a 
public service.  Those early Ren artists were clearly aware of what their 
individual efforts, as individual artists.  After all, with acquaintance with 
early Ren, one can spot a Duccio easily, even among his peers.  A unique 
--never before, never again -- vision to amplify and deepen the public 
experience. 

As for the ancient Egyptiuan we say it's art for the sake of historical 
convenience, knowing at the same time the sculpture  was indeed a public 
adventure (the style and the common religious belief) for private purpose, the 
king's afterlife, a receptical for his soul.
