What about writers of cultural history (like  Daniel Bell - where this
discussion began)

Have you ever made it through any books or essays without thinking "muddled --
way too muddled" -- and then moved on to something else?

I admit that the entire genre does not appeal to me unless, like "From Dawn to
Decadence" the book serves as an introduction/commentary on a number of
historic writers.

Concerning the history of "artists and the educated classes", I'd rather get
that  from novels and biographies. (am currently reading an amazing 1500 page
novel about post-partition India: "A Suitable Boy" -- and hope I never
finish)
