BTW - the recent HBO police drama series called "The Wire" explicitly dramatizes the issue of institutionalization in contemporary American urban life - with separate seasons devoted to various institutions (politics, journalism, drug traffic, schools, etc)
How do we know that? Because the producer told us so in the commentary that accompanied the DVD release of the 60 or so episodes of the series. (wouldn't it be nice if Shakespear could have done the same thing, with a line-by-line commentary when Lear or the Tempest were finally released on DVD?) Of course, American television is an institution itself, and producers/directors have to make their fair share of compromises themselves in order to reach a wide enough audience to satisfy the network.
